Maluti Adventist Hospital Receives German Embassy Support for Cervical Cancer Project

Maluti Adventist Hospital healthcare team conducting cervical cancer outreach screening and community sensitisation in Nokong as part of the German Embassy-funded Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment Project.

Cervical cancer remains the leading cancer affecting women in Lesotho, with a recorded rate of 49.9 new cases per 100,000 women as of 2020, resulting in an estimated 370 deaths annually, according to the World Health Organization (2021). Women living in rural communities often face significant barriers to accessing timely screening and treatment services. Many cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, while limited access to specialised equipment means that patients requiring procedures such as Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) often have to travel long distances to receive care. For many families, transport costs and the distance to treatment centres contribute to delays in care and loss to follow-up.

In response to these challenges, Maluti Adventist Hospital has been awarded funding through the German Embassy in South Africa's Micro-Project Scheme for the implementation of the Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment Project. The project seeks to establish reliable and accessible cervical cancer screening and early treatment services at Maluti Adventist Hospital, improving reproductive health outcomes and reducing late-stage cervical cancer presentations.

Through the grant, the hospital will procure essential medical equipment, including a colposcope, thermal ablation device, and a Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) machine. The equipment will strengthen the hospital's capacity to provide timely screening, diagnosis, and treatment of cervical pre-cancerous lesions, reducing the need for women to travel elsewhere for these services.

The project also includes community sensitisation activities and outreach screening campaigns aimed at raising awareness about cervical cancer prevention and the importance of early detection. The outreach programme began on 12 May 2026 and has already reached the communities of Nokong and Ha Mokhathi, where women received Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) screening services.

VIA is a simple and effective screening method used to identify early abnormal changes that may lead to cervical cancer if left untreated. Through increased community outreach and improved access to treatment, the project aims to screen more than 1,000 women while significantly reducing the number of patients referred elsewhere for treatment.

Through this initiative, Maluti Adventist Hospital aims to reduce barriers to healthcare access and ensure that more women, particularly those living in remote rural communities, benefit from timely screening, diagnosis, and treatment services. The hospital remains committed to improving women's health outcomes and contributing to the national effort to reduce the burden of cervical cancer in Lesotho.

Lifestyle Clinic Promotes Holistic Healing and Disease Prevention

Lifestyle Clinic team members with visiting lifestyle medicine specialist Dr. Ana Belén Cáceres during her visit to Maluti Adventist Hospital.

Introduction
The Lifestyle Clinic works with patients managing lifestyle-related and chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and cancer, along with other general health conditions. Instead of relying primarily on medication, the clinic focuses on lifestyle medicine interventions, including nutrition, exercise, restorative sleep, hydrotherapy, herbal remedies, natural oils, stress management, and other natural approaches designed to improve overall well-being.

Approach
The clinic team explained that patients who need medical treatment or specialised care are referred to medical doctors. Once their condition is stabilised, they may continue receiving supportive care and lifestyle guidance through the clinic. According to the team, what sets lifestyle medicine apart from conventional medicine is its holistic approach.

“We do not only focus on the disease itself, but also on the root cause of the illness rather than simply treating the symptoms,” the team explained

Patient Setbacks
The team identified unhealthy dietary habits, physical inactivity, and insufficient sleep as some of the most common challenges affecting patients. These factors contribute significantly to the growing burden of chronic diseases, many of which can be prevented or effectively managed through healthier lifestyle choices. Over the years, the clinic has witnessed numerous success stories among patients struggling with uncontrolled lifestyle diseases. Through personalised counselling, lifestyle modification programmes, and ongoing support, many individuals have achieved substantial improvements in their health outcomes.

The clinic also recognises the strong connection between mental and physical health. Many patients are referred for counselling and emotional support as part of a comprehensive treatment.

“Many people do not realise that mental health affects physical health. When emotional and psychological issues are addressed, patients often begin to improve physically as well,” the team shared.

Success Story

One notable success story involved a patient who had been admitted to Maluti Adventist Hospital with critically elevated blood sugar levels. Subsequent to his discharge, he was referred to the Lifestyle Clinic, where he received lifestyle counselling and supportive natural therapies. Through consistent follow-up and adherence to recommended lifestyle changes, his blood sugar levels improved significantly, leading to adjustments in his medication regimen. The case highlighted the transformative potential of healthy lifestyle practices in managing and, in some cases, reversing Type 2 diabetes alongside proper medical supervision.

Visiting Lifestyle Medicine Specialist Shares Expertise

The clinic recently had the privilege of hosting Dr. Ana Belén Cáceres, a lifestyle medical specialist from Chile, who shared her expertise and experience with the Lifestyle Clinic team. Dr. Cáceres studied medicine at an Adventist university in Argentina and later obtained board certification in lifestyle medicine in the United States. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in clinical nutrition.

Drawing from her work in Chile, Dr. Cáceres described her role in an outpatient lifestyle medicine clinic where patients’ assessments are structured around the six “vital signs” of lifestyle medicine: nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, social connection, and avoidance of harmful substances. She emphasised that a substantial proportion of chronic diseases are closely linked to unhealthy habits, and a central component of her practice involves helping patients understand the root causes of their conditions, which is essential for sustainable health improvements.

“It can be difficult for people to change their habits, but with the help of God, it is possible,” she said.

In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Cáceres volunteers at a lifestyle centre where patients participate in a ten-day residential programme focused on lifestyle medicine, natural remedies, spiritual growth and health education. Throughout the programme, participants are closely monitored for improvements in blood pressure, blood sugar, body weight, and overall well-being. She reported that many patients experience significant health improvements at the end of the programme, including weight loss, improved blood sugar control, and better mental health.

“Many patients arrive feeling isolated, hopeless, and without purpose. Through the love, care, education, and support they receive, many leave feeling mentally and physically better,” she explained.

During her visit to Maluti Adventist Hospital, Dr. Cáceres conducted educational sessions on disease prevention, hydrotherapy, mental health, spirituality, and holistic patient care. She emphasised the urgent need to prioritize prevention and healthy lifestyle choices in addressing the growing burden of chronic disease.

“If one aspect of health is affected, physical, mental, or spiritual, overall health is also affected,” she said.

Maluti Adventist Hospital Achieves Five-Star Rating in National Assessment

Maluti Adventist Hospital achieved a five-star rating in the Ministry of Health Star Rating Assessment, ranking among the top-performing hospitals with an overall score of 97.36%.

Maluti Adventist Hospital has once again achieved a five-star rating in the Ministry of Health’s Star Rating Assessment for Semester 2 of 2025, which was conducted in January 2026.

The hospital attained an impressive score of 97.36%, improving from its Semester 1 score of 96.64%, where it also received a five-star rating. This achievement placed Maluti Adventist Hospital among the top-performing healthcare institutions in the country, outperforming eighteen other hospitals assessed during the exercise.

The Star Rating Assessment evaluates hospitals across four key performance areas: Management and Staff Performance, Service Charter and Accountability, Safe and Conducive Facilities, and Quality of Care. It is conducted twice a year by the Ministry of Health to promote continuous quality improvement, accountability, and strengthened healthcare service delivery across health facilities.

The consistent improvement in performance reflects the dedication of hospital staff and management in maintaining high standards of patient care and service delivery. The assessment also recognises efforts to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff, strengthen accountability systems, and improve overall healthcare service quality.

Due to this strong performance, Maluti Adventist Hospital received a grant to support healthcare service improvement initiatives. Through this support, the hospital was able to procure reception desks, UPS systems for the laboratory, an emergency crash trolley, and aluminium partitioning at the pharmacy to enhance patient privacy during medication collection.

This achievement marks another important milestone for Maluti Adventist Hospital and highlights its continued commitment to providing quality healthcare services to the communities it serves.

Healthy Lesotho Donation Strengthens Patient Care at Maluti Adventist Hospital

A patient receiving dental care at Maluti Adventist Hospital using the newly donated dental chair, part of equipment support provided by Healthy Lesotho to strengthen patient services.

Maluti Adventist Hospital recently received a generous donation of essential medical equipment from Healthy Lesotho, a non-profit organisation based in Seattle, United States, founded by Dr. Barbara Meyer and Terry Ellard. The organisation supports agricultural and healthcare initiatives in Lesotho and has maintained a longstanding relationship with Maluti Adventist Hospital.

Over the years, Healthy Lesotho has played an important role in strengthening healthcare services at the hospital through fundraising and equipment donations. Previous contributions have supported the maternity and neonatal units, providing much-needed equipment at a time when some items were outdated and others had to be shared across departments. These donations included essential equipment such as infant incubators and other maternity and neonatal supplies, helping to improve the quality of care for mothers and newborns.

As part of its continued support, Healthy Lesotho recently donated additional essential medical equipment aimed at strengthening patient care across several departments. The donation included a dental chair, 31 heaters for hospital wards, IV infusion pumps, syringe pumps, nebulisers, oximeters for newborns, specialised masks and airways for oxygen therapy in newborns, as well as water pumps for the hospital borehole system.

The donation comes at a particularly important time as temperatures continue to drop during the winter season. The ward heaters will help create a warmer and more comfortable environment for patients, supporting recovery and improving patient comfort. Maintaining adequate warmth is especially important for vulnerable patients, including the elderly, young children, and those recovering from illness or surgery.

The donated equipment is also expected to strengthen monitoring and treatment services across the hospital. Neonatal equipment will support improved care for newborns requiring oxygen therapy and monitoring, while infusion pumps, syringe pumps, and nebulisers will enhance the hospital’s ability to provide safe and effective treatment. The water pumps are expected to improve sustainability by reducing reliance on external water supply and improving access through the borehole system.

Maluti Adventist Hospital expresses its sincere appreciation for the continued partnership and support provided by Healthy Lesotho over the years. This donation reflects the organisation’s ongoing commitment to strengthening healthcare services and improving patient care for the communities served by the hospital.

Chaplaincy Department Strengthened Through Generous Support

Appreciation and encouragement cards prepared for patients and staff.

The Chaplaincy Department at Maluti Adventist Hospital has been strengthened through the generous support of Pastor Clifford Herman, whose contribution has enhanced both spiritual care resources and ministry outreach within the hospital.

During his time with the department, Pastor Herman became closely familiar with the daily needs and challenges involved in providing consistent spiritual support to patients and staff. Moved by the department’s mission of care and compassion, he offered meaningful practical assistance that helped strengthen key areas of ministry.

As part of this support, the department received 950 appreciation and encouragement cards that will be distributed to patients and staff. These cards carry messages of hope, gratitude, and spiritual reassurance, reminding each recipient that they are valued, supported, and cared for during their healing journey.

The department also received a sound system to support worship services, chapel programmes, and patient ministry activities. The equipment includes 12 speakers, one microphone, one amplifier, and two long connecting cables (10m each). The system is not yet operational; however, once installed, it is expected to greatly enhance communication and improve worship experiences across the hospital’s various ministries.

In addition to these contributions, the department also received financial support to strengthen ongoing chaplaincy operations and ministry activities. This support will help enhance spiritual care services and ensure continued assistance to patients, families, and staff members.

The Chaplaincy Department expresses sincere appreciation to all partners and supporters, including Pastor Clifford Herman, whose contribution played a key role in providing both the appreciation cards and the sound system. His support has helped strengthen the department’s capacity to deliver meaningful spiritual care within the hospital.

Through these combined efforts, the Chaplaincy Department remains committed to being a source of hope, comfort, and faith, supporting holistic healing beyond physical care.
